Botswana is considered a relatively safe country. However, it is recommended that you use common sense and remain vigilant as you would in any other unfamiliar country. Travel insurance to cover theft and medical expenses is recommended.

Avoid flashy displays of wealth and carrying large sums of cash and valuables, as pick-pocketing does happen. Avoid travelling alone at night and through isolated areas (especially women). Avoid driving out of the city at night as roaming wildlife and wandering livestock do pose a hazard. Only use reputable taxi services and agree on a fare before beginning the journey.

Malaria and other insect borne diseases are a risk in Botswana, so the necessary precautions should be taken to avoid bites and infection. Immunisation against yellow fever, hepatitis A & B, typhoid and rabies is recommended. Routine vaccinations include MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, meningitis, varicella, polio and influenza. Stick to bottled water in rural towns.
