Best time to visit Al Ain

As throughout most of the UAE, the hottest time of the year in Al Ain is between May and September, when temperatures can reach a sweltering 41 degrees Celsius. Thanks to its desert climate, there is no rainfall during these summer months, so you’d best come prepared with cool clothing and lots of sunscreen. The cooler months of October to March are ideally the best time to visit Al Ain. If you’re visiting during November, you can catch the popular Al Ain Music Festival held over a number of days. Keep in mind that December and January see more tourists, while June/ July bring discounted airfares and hotels, and fewer travellers.

Al Ain is not as glamorous as its sister city, Abu Dhabi, but it has lots to offer in the way of history, culture, shopping and green oases. Located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, bordering Oman, Al Ain’s landscapes and archaeology stem back 4,000 years to early human settlement. Al Ain’s lack of modern high-rises and cosmopolitan living pays tribute to its authenticity and modest culture that you cannot help but be drawn into. Affectionately known as the “Garden City” with its swaying palm trees and natural springs, Al Ain is sprinkled with lush parks and gardens you could spend hours getting lost in.

Jebel Hafeet is the rugged backdrop to the city, its golden silhouette rising above the ancient tombs and relics surrounding it. A drive up to the top of the 1,240m peak will treat you to splendid panoramic views over the entire region below.

Those interested in the city’s history and archaeology should definitely visit the Al Ain National Museum for an introduction to the city’s ethnology and historic settlements. To get a glimpse inside the home of the first Sheikh ruler of Abu Dhabi, visit the Al Ain Palace Museum.

Al Ain’s architecture is as unique as its history, with solid brick fortresses and towers which can be climbed for envious views of the city. A great example of this is the Al-Jahili Fort.

Bring the family for a day of fun at Wadi Adventure Park – a refreshing hub of water sports, zip lines, surfing and climbing walls for all ages and abilities. This is a hotspot for locals in summer, so come early! For something a little more adrenalin pumping, why not try the rollercoasters, sky-flyers, skating rinks and thrilling rides at Hili Fun City? As one of the UAE’s most famous theme parks, this is one for the memory books.

Mingle with the locals and bargain your way through the stalls at Souk Al Qattara (open from October to May) or wander between the Persian silks and perfumed pathways of many other wonderful souks scattered around town. You haven’t experience a slice of local culture until you’ve visited the camel market – walk around and watch the locals bartering over the camels, a highlight for any visitor.

Looking for some respite from all the shopping and sightseeing? Central Public Garden and Al Ain Oasis are the perfect places to cool off, have a picnic or take a walk through the date palms and colourful flowers.
